For Statement of Objects and Reasons, see Maharashtra Government Gazette, Part V, Extraordinary, page 465.
An Act further to amend the Indian Forest Act, 1927 in its application to the State of Maharashtra.
Whereas it is expedient further to amend the Indian Forest Act, 1927, in its application to the State of Maharashtra, for the purpose hereinafter appearing; It is hereby enacted in the Fifteenth Year of the Republic of India as follows :-
1. Short title. - This Act may be called the Indian Forest (Maharashtra Amendment) Act, 1964.
Statement of Objects and Reasons - Maharashtra Act No. XV of 1965. - In the past there was no provision in the Indian Forest Act, 1927 (in its application to the State of Maharashtra), empowering the State Government to make rules for regulating by grant of licences the cutting or conversion of timber in a saw mill within forest limits and certain distance therefrom and charge fees for licences. This had resulted in a large scale illicit cutting and conversion of timber from Government Forests and consequent loss of revenue. It was, therefore, proposed to take power to the State Government to regulate such conversion or cutting of timber by amending section 41 of the Act suitably.

"(hh) regulate by grant of licences, within the forest limits or such distance therefrom not exceeding eighty kilometres as may be determined, the converting or cutting of timber in a saw mill, and prescribe fees and conditions, subject to which such licences may be granted;"
